Pat organizes "Go Red for Women" Event in Smithtown.

(L to R) Councilwoman Pat Biancaniello, Kings Park resident Corrine Maher, Michele Gervat, American Heart Association.

Feb. 03, 2006 - Smithtown Town Councilwoman Patricia Biancaniello and women from across the Township of Smithtown came together this morning to join with other women across the nation who are supporting the American Heart Association’s Love your Heart, Go Red for Women movement.  The Women of Smithtown are united in their message.   We are concerned with the statistics showing that heart disease is the Number One Killer of Women over the age of 25 in the United States.  We support the American Heart Association’s nationwide movement that celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together and wipe out heart disease.

We are concerned with the facts that show:

bullet Only 13 percent of women view heart disease as a health threat, even though it’s women’s No. 1 killer.
bullet Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills nearly half a million women a year, about one per minute.
bullet One in four females and one in four males in the United States suffers from a form of CVD.
bullet CVD claims more lives than the next six most common causes of death combined.
bullet On average, an American dies of CVD every 34 seconds.
bullet Coronary heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women over age 25.
bullet Sixty-four percent of women who died suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms.
bullet One in 2.5 women will die of heart disease or stroke, compared with one in 30 from breast cancer.
bullet Heart disease rates in post-menopausal women are two to three times higher than in pre-menopausal women of the same age.
bullet Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death for American women, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability.
bullet Stroke kills more women than men. In 2002, females represented nearly 62 percent of stroke deaths.
bullet African-American and Mexican-American women have higher heart disease and stroke risk factors than white women of comparable socioeconomic status.

Please join the women of Smithtown in their support of the American Heart Association’s Love your Heart, Go Red for Women movement.  Donations can be made directly at the American Heart Association’s website at: http://72.3.227.201/go_red_in_your_own_fashion/make_a_donation.html
